Finding Law School Information

Posted on 01 October 2008

Despite their common goal of preparing students for a career in law, law schools often vary in their educational approaches. For this reason, you should get to know as much as possible about the law schools to which you intend to apply. There are several ways to do this, beginning with the official calendars, brochures and guides provided by each school. These will usually be sent to you upon request.

Another excellent way to find information is by searching websites that provide links to law schools in the United States and Canada. A comprehensive list of online links to law school websites is available from the Law School Admission Council’s (LSAC) website.

It is also a good idea to check if prospective law schools have online discussion groups or listserves for law or pre-law students. Furthermore, there may be students or advisors available at each school to answer questions online, and it is usually worthwhile to make the effort to contact them.

Finally, if you have the chance to visit a prospective school, do so. The school or its pre-law student society may offer orientation counseling, pre-law advice, as well as campus tours. If you have any special questions, try to arrange a meeting with the information officer in the law faculty.
